My family and I currently live in an RV. On purpose. We’re a little more than a month into our year-long tour of the United States, spending the majority of our nights sleeping in a travel trailer parked in a campground.

Fortunately, a few friends and Internet buddies have offered to host us in their homes at various stops along the way. This is awesome because it saves us money on campground fees (every little bit counts when you’re supporting a family on a freelance writer’s income!) and we get to use real indoor plumbing, no poop toting required. Plus we get to spend time with some really amazing people, like Ilina, Rachel, Kimberly and their generous and patient families.

And how have we repaid this generosity?

Well, a couple weeks ago in Raleigh I had to wake the lovely Ilina up at 7:30 am on the day we were supposed to vacate her guestroom and inform her that I, um, had my dates wrong, and uh, man this is awkward, wasn’t expected in Richmond until the next day, and, uh, in other words, um, can we stay with you one more day and night?

And of course she was hospitable and charming and assured us it was no problem. Of course we could stay. Of course we could.

What else was the poor woman going to say at 7:30 in the morning with me and my entire family of four already in her home?!

Did I mention my daughter had thrown up in one of her guest beds the night before?

We are awesome.

Later that day, I tore down the shower curtain in her beautiful guest bathroom.

You know, just to say thank you.

Now, who else wants to volunteer to host us for a couple (or a few, or you know, however many) nights in their home? I know, you can hardly contain your excitement!!
