Highlights from My Week with a Pathetic, Sick Baby

by Amy Urquhart

on September 1, 2010 in Parenting

My nine-month-old son Nate caught his first cold this week. Finally I understood why all those children I’d seen with crusty, snotty noses were out in the world looking that way: if I wiped Nate’s nose every time it dripped, he’d have no skin left on his face. Let the crust be. The cold lasted [...]

Last week I had the pleasure of staying in New York City with none other than the lovely and talented Mishelle Lane (also known as Secret Agent Mama). Our plan was all set…our flights would arrive at LaGuardia a mere eight minutes apart. Things would be perfect…we’d meet up at the baggage carousel and head [...]

My Super Simple Laundry Secret

Whoever thought I would be taking the time to write about laundry? Not me, that’s for sure. However, it occurred to me recently that others might be able to benefit from the finely tuned system I’ve devised over the years. If you’re like me, laundry isn’t really a horrible chore in and of itself. In [...]

Surgical Perks

I recently had surgery. It was my first time. When I walked into the operating room (yes, WALKED IN MYSELF), I came this close to having a panic attack. I was really nervous, and just as I was about to burst into tears, the clever scrub nurse started asking me questions, like what was my [...]

BlogHer Beauty on a Budget

The very fact that I am writing about the concept of beauty may surprise you. It’s not a topic I approach very often, because there are a lot of other women in the blogosphere who are much more qualified in writing about the topic. It’s not that I consider myself un-beautiful…it’s that I really have [...]

A Letter to My Gallbladder

by Amy Urquhart

on July 27, 2010 in Identity

Dear Gallbladder, You don’t realize it yet, but you’re on your way out. If it was up to me, I’d keep you around, but you’ve turned sour on me, so the professionals say it’s time to give you the boot. We’ve had a good run, haven’t we? I treated you well for a lot of [...]

Getting Pumped for New York: Five New York Movies to Love

Five New York Movies to Love

Around the time I was about thirteen years old, I was chosen to attend a visual arts camp for ten days in June. It was sleep-away camp, and I was pumped. I’d never gone away from home for that long before, and I was super-curious about the camp and what it would be like to stay there for all that time with a bunch of other kids I’d never met before.

Skip the Baby, Get a Dog

by Amy Urquhart

on July 14, 2010 in Parenting

We never had a dog while I was growing up. That is, not until my dad met my step-mom. Her family had a beautiful golden retriever named Skye, “The Dumb Blonde,” my dad affectionately called her.

Then I met my husband-to-be, Graham, and he had a dog named Mazda. Mazda was named after his first true love, I suppose.

The Ending Sucked: Five Movies I Can't Stand

You’ve all had this experience: You’re at the movie theatre or in your living room watching that film you’ve been wanting to see ever since you first saw the preview. You’ve got a giant serving of salty, buttery popcorn, your sweetie beside you, and if you’re at the theatre, your wallet is a couple of twenties lighter than when you arrived.

What Shoes Not to Wear

I’m not the kind of girl who knows a lot about fashion. You’d never refer to me as a “girly girl.” I always need help figuring out how to dress for special events. When it came time to pack for my recent trip to New York City, I was silly enough to leave packing until the day before the trip.
