When Pigs Flew

Oh how I love to think about the young women in my life and their lives ahead of them…so full of hope! As my daughter enters teenagehood I think about all of the possibilities and our discussions over the past couple of years.

  • Study in Amsterdam.
  • Become a teacher.
  • Be a signer.
  • Be a writer.
  • Blog!
  • Be a mom.
  • Maybe get married, maybe not.
  • Go to college.
  • Work with kids.
  • Work with kids who need organ transplants.

I don’t ever want her or any woman to listen to anyone who says, “You can do that when pigs fly.” Why do we insist on listening to people who aren’t even special in our lives? Why do we let them influence what we think we can do, or should do? Why, do we listen to external influences like marketers and those perphrial people in our lives in our social media streams?

We’re better than that. We’re incredible people.

I want my daughter and all of us to look back on our lives and think, “I made those pigs soar.”

About Julia Roberts

Laughing at raising your two kids with special needs is frowned upon in certain circles, you know? Like Grandma and Grandpa find it especially annoying. Blogging since 2005 at Kidneys and Eyes and co-founder of a social networking site, Support for Special Needs, she stays pretty busy working in her business with her husband (yeah, they're crazy) and insurance receipts. A night owl, Diet Coke lover, and vintage photo collector she hopes to raise advocates and activists.
