What We Can Learn From Parks and Rec

I’m a huge fan of the television show Parks and Rec. If you are unfamiliar with it, it’s a comedy on NBC that is shot documentary style, like The Office. It follows the lives of the Parks and Rec department of Pawnee, Indiana.

Not only is it a very funny (without a laugh track) show, it also has a lot of heart. When the characters aren’t up to some crazy (but well intended) antics, they deal with situations that are relatable to us all. I believe that we can learn a lot from them.

Leslie Knope

Leslie is the former leader of the Parks and Rec office. Her work ethic is one to be admired. If she truly believes in something, she will go all out to get it accomplished.

Leslie is also a very good friend. She is everyone’s biggest cheerleader, supporting and celebrating everything. She can make even the simplest things feel unbelievably important. Whether you are about to have a baby or have recently gotten married, Leslie knows how to make you feel special.

Ron Swanson

On the surface, Ron is a pretty tough, no-nonsense kind of guy. He whittles, loves to eat (a lot of) meat, and, until recently, didn’t have a mailing address, preferring to live off the grid. He will tell you like it is and doesn’t sugar coat anything.  Brutal honesty is his middle name.

Chris Traeger

If there is one thing about Chris that might bother some people, it would probably be his relentlessly cheerful attitude. Sometimes this world can be quite cruel and unkind. His positivity is like a breath of fresh air.

Andy Dwyer

Although he may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, Andy is a model of perseverance and determination. He isn’t afraid to go after what he wants, including trying to become a police officer.

Tom Haverford & Donna Meagle

One of the best things we can learn from Tom and Donna is this: Treat. Yo. Self. With all the craziness that we have to deal with, from cramming for a final to deciding on whether or not to go to college, it’s good to indulge in really fun stuff every once in a while. And I don’t care what anyone else thinks, I love Ben’s treat to himself.

Yes, these are fictional characters. But what they believe in, hard work, honesty, and never giving up, are all characteristics that we should strive to embody.
