Making a Cowl That Everyone Will Go Crazy Over

Cowls are all the rage this season, and rightly so. Not only are they cute, they’re warm–and unlike their bastard cousin, the scarf, they stay on your neck with ease.

The cowl pattern I am going to share with you is one that I made up after seeing women wearing stranded cowls. To make the cowl you will need to know how to crochet a chain. (There is a great video to watch here if you don’t know how. It’s super easy, I promise.)

You’ll need:

  • Yarn. I used to two skeins of cheap red heart yarn held together so that I could use my N hook and have a bigger chain. You can also use a bulky yarn to achieve this look.
  • A crochet hook in a size appropriate to your yarn.

Directions:

1. Make slip knot with either your two yarn strands held together or one strand of bulky yarn.

2. Crochet your chain–you will need at least 18 feet to create the cowl.

3. Once you’ve completed your chain and are happy with the length, fasten it off. Now we are going to begin to coil the chain to create the cowl. To figure out how big to make your coil, you can take a separate piece of yarn and measure where you want the cowl to lay or you can use a long necklace. Leave a 10″-12″ ‘tail’ on your coil and loop it around to make it the appropriate size.

4. Keep coiling the chain until you have approximately the same amount left as the tail. You may need to move the first ‘tail’ over to have it line up with the second ‘tail’. This is very important!

5. Tie a knot with the two ‘tail’ ends.

Tie the ends over the coil

6. Tightly wrap the ends around the coil over and over until you have just the string ends remaining. Tie those off with several knots, clip the string and sort of shove the knot down into the wrapped yarn.

Just about finished!

Enjoy your new cowl! It can be worn as is or wrapped twice around your neck for a snugger, warmer feel.

enjoy!
