Feel Good Music

Great minds think alike. When Britt published her post about her self-esteem playlist, I was all,”OMIGAWSH. I have been working on a post about how music can be a girl’s best friend. We are both brilliant.”

I have my mom to thank for showing me the power of a good song. Even before I could say, “Drop it like it’s hot,” I could drop it like it was hot.

Though I always had a huge appreciation for various styles of music, it seemed like I really began to connect to it when I was in my teenage years. Lyrics reminded me of special times with friends. Squishy love-crush song dedications told the stories of boyfriends (or ex-boyfriends). Music gave me respite from marathon study sessions; a well-timed boogie break can re-energize a tired mind. Best of all, certain songs just plain made me feel good.

I call them my “Feel Good” songs. This is the playlist I turn to when I need to shake myself out of a bad mood. Or if I’m already feelin’ good, these are the songs I hear in my head when I’m walking with that “I am the shizz and I know it” swagger. Every girl needs a Feel Good playlist. Here are a few of the songs on mine:

“Just Fine” – Mary J. Blige ~ “So I like what I see when I’m lookin’ at me when I’m walkin’ past the mirror…. Got my head on straight, I got my vibe right; I ain’t gonna let you kill it.” Like I said – this is an I-am-the-shizz-and-I-know-it type of song.

“Bigger Than My Body” – John Mayer ~ Ignoring the fact that John Mayer is something of a dork, “Bigger Than My Body” is my personal theme song. SHUT UP, CHANEL AND DANI. They are my sisters; they pick on me because I am the oldest but the shortest. This song is all about recognizing your inner potential and giving yourself credit where it’s due.

“Feel Good, Inc” – The Gorillaz ~ I mean, duh. How could a “Feel Good” playlist not include this song?

“All You Can Eat” – The Fat Boys ~ What? I didn’t say the lyrics had to be inspirational or motivational; it’s all about finding music that gives you The Smiles.

So howzaboutit? What’s on your Feel Good playlist?

J-Dub Moxie has a BS in BS, but someone thought it was a good idea to make her responsible for educating adolescents. She does a good impression of an 8th Grade English teacher by day, but by night she's a gangsta nerd superhero. She wishes she could clone copies of her husband Frank to sell; he is that awesome. Despite Moxie's best efforts, their four children (ages 6-10) refuse to be corrupted into doing her evil bidding. Moxie is in love with carbohydrates and in hate with writing bios. When I was going through some dark times health-wise the songs that always made me feel better were India Arie’s ‘Video’ and Corinne Bailey Rae’s ‘Put Your Records On’. These songs are my marooned-on-a-deserted-island songs.

Feel Good Inc is a great song. It’s a favourite on my iPod.

The Mary J Blige song really is terrific. I think I have a new favourite thanks to you!

I love Feel Good, Inc. It always lifts my spirits. Also, love the picture w/ Grover in the background. In my pictures from the 70s, my Bert hand puppet is always near me somewhere in the background.

One Friday afternoon, on the commute back from work, I blew out the speakers of the Dreamweaver Express jamming out to “Feel Good Inc.” The Gorillaz are awesome and I’m pretty sure they wrote “Clint Eastwood” about me.

This is my theme song and the epitome of my character. My favorite part of the video is when India is roped into auditioning for a music video and it is painfully obvious that she’s not you’re typical, excuse my French, video h– uh girl… It reminds me of my cheerleader tryouts when I stuck out like a soar thumb and still managed to rock it. I hope that you will all embrace who you are and ROCK YOUR MOXIE to this song.
