The Evolution of the Holiday Sweater

holiday sweaterChances are you currently have (or are even currently wearing) a holiday sweater. These itchy festive wraps have become as much a staple of the holidays as spiral ham or twinkle lights. Some holiday sweaters are given in earnest and sincere love. These are the gifts from elderly family members or parents of friends of yours. They have been considered, by some, to be an incredibly thoughtful gift because you can actually use it. What else are you going to wear to your office holiday party that will instantly start a conversation?

I have owned many holiday sweaters and in the late 80′s I owned some truly splendid holiday sweatshirts that came with battery packs and their own light show. Oh yes. Because there is nothing wrong about a chubby 6th grader roaming the halls of middle school with a Christmas tree down the front of her blossoming bosom with a syncopated light show going on. Ahem.

It is now common for people to throw “Ugly Holiday Sweater” parties  and deck the halls of their home with friends itching it out to Jingle Bell Rock. They key to wearing a holiday sweater well is to go big or don’t play. Simple is lame. December is the time for glitter and puppies with bows.

But for those that need to keep things chill I present to you the evolution of the snowflake sweater. I would so wear the 1960′s number.

My daughter (12yrs old) likes those hideous sweaters from the 80′s and wears them… out in public.

  2. Foster Ima says:

Huh. I actually find the 50s and 60s sweaters to be not terrible. I think the 60s sweater needs longer sleeves, but that’s just a minor quibble, right?

  3. MamaKaren says:

I confess that I wore Christmas sweaters in the 90s. I blame youthful ignornance.

I would actually wear the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s sweaters and I DID wear the 80′s and 90′s (proudly at the time). Dresden, I also wore the sweatshirts with a battery pack and I also GLITTER GLUED sweatshirts with neato Christmas sayings. I have evolved only slightly as I am currently wearing a black t-shirt that has holly leaves and berries and “Nice” in silver letters. But I’m PMSing so it’s a reminder of what I NEED to be rather than what I usually am. hehe!
I hope you have a great birthday and a very Merry Christmas.

My husband still wears an 80′s sweater. HIS OWN. From high school. It hurts my heart every time he dons it.
