I have this really bad habit of needing to make fancy, impressive desserts for other people. I can’t just take a box of brownies and serve them to guests. No, I first have to add in some salted caramel or even just a handful of Milk Duds. Sure, there is nothing fancy about Milk Duds, but it’s something unexpected and it makes my dessert a little more memorable.
Clearly, I’m an overachiever. At least in the cooking department. Don’t even ask me about the laundry department. Or the clean toilet department. Ew.
So, when I was asked to bring a treat along to a recent get together for a big group of kids, I started planning. Nothing felt right, though and I really wasn’t even in the mood to bake.
I totally took the easy route and planned to make some good old fashioned Rice Krispies treats. Then I started melting the marshmallows and my weird recipe disorder kicked in. You see, I’m incapable of following a recipe. I can not do it. Ever. So, I reached over and grabbed a jar of peanut butter and scooped some into my marshmallows. Then when it was time to pour in the Rice Krispies cereal, I grabbed the box of Cocoa Krispies too. And I’m not sure how it happened, but suddenly a bag of Reese’s Pieces appeared in my hand and were dumped in along with all of the other goodies.
Basically what happened is that I took this favorite childhood treat and made it 100 times better. People could not get enough of these. And, what’s really super amazing is that I made a second batch of these just a few days later. That might not seem amazing to you, but as a food blogger I generally don’t make the same dessert twice. These were totally worth it, though. So simple and beyond yummy! Plus, they are full of Fall colors so I feel very festive eating them.
Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Rice Krispies Treats
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 10 ounces (about 40) marshmallows
- 1/2 cup smooth or chunky peanut butter
- 4 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 2 cups Cocoa Krispies cereal
- 1 cup Reese’s Pieces
In a large stock pot, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the marshmallows to the pan and when almost melted, stir in the peanut butter. Stir until everything is completely melted and combined well. Pour in all of the cereal and the Reese’s Pieces. Stir well to combine. Pour into a 9×13 dish lined with parchment paper and press down firmly to flatten the tops. Allow to cool completely before cutting.

Mmmmmm…! Your posts always make me SO hungry. Nom nom.
Being baking overachievers is totally what makes us who we are! But sometimes you hit on even simple recipes that are creative and fun — this is one of those! LOVE this idea!!
These are really close to the Special K bars my mom use to make. PB. into the marshmallow mixture, spread in pan, cool and take chocolate chips and melt and spread on top. Havent had in years!!! The other thing to try is to take Special K cereal with stawberry and add to mixture. Samething add choc. on top..soo yummy!!!
These sounds like breakfast lunch and dinner. Love me a krispie.
