“What do you want to be when you grow up?” There’s that question AGAIN. People have been asking us since we were old enough to wipe our own butts.
It feels like a lot of pressure, doesn’t it? Especially if you’re about to graduate from high school and venture off into uncharted territory.
Some of us know from an early age what we want to do with our lives. And for some of us, it takes most of our lives to even figure it out. I don’t claim to know all the answers on how to find your right path but I do have some advice for those who are searching for direction.
- Learn. Be a sponge. Collect knowledge. Be curious about everything.
- Dream. If you could do anything, what would that be? Don’t be afraid to go big. Write them down! Even allowing yourself to think about your dreams is a step in the right direction.
- Try. You’ll never know if you like something or if you’re good at something until you try. Trying doesn’t hurt. It always helps. (Unless you’re trying to fight a bear or something. Don’t try that).
- Fail. Failing is just another way for us to learn. Mistakes are blessings in disguise.
- Discover your heart. A good place to start is discovering what you really care about. What makes you want to make a stand? What makes you angry? What inspires you? Use all of that as clues.
- Serve. We humans are at our best when we are giving back. Do things with the intention of bettering other people’s lives. In return, it will enrich your own.
- Measure your success with happiness not your bank account. Money can’t buy you love.
- Don’t wait. Learn now. Dream now. Try it now. Fail now. Serve now.

I often measure my success by the amount of money I make, but I’m learning to measure it by how stressfree I am and how smoothly things are running at home. If my children and I are on time every morning, getting to bed on time and in general enjoying our time together instead of being disciplined then that’s success. Being happy with what I do – writing – is balanced with my health. So as long as I maintain balance I think I’m where I want to be with some detours along the way for excitement. :-)
Great post.
I like exciting detours. Those are my favorite. Thanks!

after being laid off in june and starting my own small business, it is a challenging time and i feel like i am starting all over again. it’s hard to not get discouraged sometimes–but i think i might just print this list and tape it to my fridge as a daily meditation. thank you!
