How To Be Popular

Popularity. (pop-ewe-lair-it-ee) 1.The state or condition of being liked or admired by many people.

We all, at some time or another, want to be the popular girl.

But how? How do we win people over or even get noticed?

When I was in high school most of the “cool” crowd gained their “fame” because they were pretty or wore cute clothes or they had access to an older brother who would supply them with cigarettes and beer or they drove a fancy car that wasn’t a Ford mini-van covered in dog hair.

They appeared to have it all. People liked them because of what they looked like or owned.

And let me tell ya… all of that? Is SO NOT IMPORTANT.

Do you know what IS important?

Loving yourself.

I don’t mean that you should gaze in the mirror for hours admiring your lips or bragging about your shiny hair.

There is a huge difference between confidence and vanity.

You should think you’re beautiful, because you ARE. You should think you’re smart, because you ARE. You should think you’re capable of anything, BECAUSE YOU ARE. We are all unique in our own imperfect ways. That’s what makes you and I amazing individuals. Can you imagine how boring this world would be if we were all the same?

You want people to like you? Here’s the secret: be yourself. Love yourself. Respect yourself enough to make good choices. Keep learning about yourself (especially through your mistakes). Be kind and humble. Be honest and brave. Be the kind of person that you would want to be friends with. Explore, dream, and discover.

Now go out there and look beyond the surface. That’s where you will find all the love you need.

“Be Who You Be” – I needz to know how I can get one of those for the wall in my kids’ playroom.

I wasn’t the “strive to be popular” type in school, but I did always envy the ease it seemed that “popular” kids have with meeting new people and carrying on flowing and non-stumbly conversation. Heck – I STILL feel like that sometimes.

I wish I could have read this when I was 13.

I love this. And you’re so right, it’s so important that we love – and respect ourselves.

Also, I can’t see or say the word “popular” without thinking of Amy singing that song at BlogHer in 2010 in NYC.
