Get Me A Plaid Beverage

It’s no secret that I love plaid. It’s just a thing, don’t ask me to explain it. Why do you breathe? It just HAPPENS.

So, yes, I dress my toddler son in something plaid just about every day. And, yes, I sleep in plaid sheets and plaid jammies and drink my coffee in a tartan mug. (Tartan is just fancy talk for plaid.)

However, I don’t have plaid moments when I cook. You won’t find me attempting an intricate plaid pattern out of a pie crust or lasagna noodles. And while I did joke about painting a car plaid I couldn’t be bothered.

The other night a friend who is also a lover of plaid (we are everywhere!) was having one of those super shitty nights. I didn’t catch what the heck was going on – but, you know, life is hard and sometimes you don’t need to know why a friend is upset to be able to catch them when they are free-falling. Sometimes it’s better to just shut the eff up and brace yourself.

I asked her if  I could do anything to help and as is the common response to such a question she replied, “Get me a drink!” Then there was a pause and she said, “ha! get me a plaid drink!”

Never one to shy away from a challenge I took to the interwebs and got my search on. Within five minutes I had a victory. You guys, the internet is so cool – it turned up a recipe from the 50′s that had been kindly reprinted in Gourmet Magazine called Madras. (I KNOW! Gourmet Magazine! You are *this* close to being a foodie now.)

Like tartan, madras is also kind of, um, plaid-ish. If Plaid was Beverly Hills I would have called Madras Beverly-Hills Adjacent. Sure, not TECHNICALLY plaid (I am totally going to get hate mail from madras freaks) – but when looking for a plaid adult beverage finding something called a madras cocktail was fist-pump-worthy.

[OH! And there is also another madras cocktail out there that you have probably heard of- you know the vodka and cranberry beverage? This drink is not that.]

Here is a list of the liquors required for this drink: apricot liqueur, green Chartreuse, Bénédictine, crème de cassis, crème de cacao, anisette, and dark Curaçao and Cognac. The recipe calls for shaved ice (another reason to buy the snoopy sno cone!) and instructs you to pour each liquid over the shaved ice one by one creating a plaid pattern.

I’ll bring the sno cone maker and the straws – let’s do this!

What’s the most fantastic cocktail recipe you have found online?

Mine is the viatini – invented by moi and a good friend for a cocktail extravaganza –
    Two parts Vodka
    One part Kahlua
One packet of Starbucks Via dissolved in a ¼ cup water
    Few drops vanilla
Shake over ice and serve with a cinnamon sugar rim and chocolate stir stick…
    Just so darn good!!

  3. The glass in that image? It’s a beautiful thing.

I discovered how to make Dark & Stormies online.

But in college, my friends and I made up a beautiful drink called the Tidy Bowl. In the most bowlish glass you have, mix a little Blue Curacao and a little soda on the rocks.

Hey, we didn’t take classes in the Science building!

I love the recipe for a mock up of Wet Willie’s Call A Cab. It uses Midori melon liqueur, peach schnapps, coconut rum, creme de bananes, Stoli Ohranj vodka, Southern Comfort peach liqueur, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, Sprite, and Ice.

since I do not drink anymore (BOO) I don’t go looking for cocktail recipes but if I ever find another plaid one I’ll be sure to pass it along.
