My husband says that I have “gotten off the cool train” because I can’t understand the majority of lyrics to the crap music they play on the radio these days.
He also has a problem with me calling popular music crap and using the term “these days”.
I, however, contend that I am still plenty cool and that it is kids these days who do not know what cool really is. Clearly. Also? Kids these days need to leave my already cool music alone.
Do you hear that teeny bopper popsters?
Keep your grubby paws off my musical memories!
Especially the sacred ones. And, you no-history-appreciatin’ whipper snappers, there is nothing more sacred than Dirty Dancing.
I’m looking at you Black Eyed Peas and your shameful jacking up of the classic “Time of My Life”. The original music was the perfect ending to the perfect movie. The original was sweet and soulful and something a girl could twirl to! But you, YOU funky bunch jokesters went and added house beats and stuttering and turned it into something that would never fit into Dirty Dancing.
Do kids these days even know what Dirty Dancing is? Do they know The Lift and spaghetti arms and “Johnny!”? Are we really facing leadership from a generation that has never carried a watermelon?
I weep at the thought.

I have a hard time not liking that one…
Preach it sistah! Oh Dirty Dancing! I remember seeing it in the theater at 14 knowing I was watching cinematic perfection and feeling like I was getting away with something. I still listen to the soundtrack! I don’t listen to mainstream radio either, that tuneless, cookie-cutter pop doesn’t do it for me.

Okay so as a person of around the same age I agree whole heartedly….Don’t touch my Dirty Dancing or Footloose for that matter. BUT your use of the words “teeny bopper popsters” just made me think something around the lines of an old man in a smoking jacket. You aged your self by at least 30 years…I must say I about lost it when someone remade a Pink Floyd song…seriously PINK FLOYD! I’m virtually holding up a lighter in support of your cause!
I don’t often comment, but I am coming up out of lurkdom to “hold up a virtual lighter of support of your cause” standing next to Andrea, Christine, and Mary from above. Nobody puts Baby in the corner!
The first time I heard the BEP’s version, I almost cried. I’m pretty sure a little piece of me died. There are certain movies and songs that are perfect as is and so NEVER be remade or sampled. And Dirty Dancing is one of them.
I just… cringe EVERY.single.TIME I hear that BEP version… I’ve never listened to it all the way through, actually.

Sadly as a mother of twin 13 year old teeny boppers I have to listen to a LOT of that crap music. It really is sad how a ‘great’ act/look can get these talentless people so far. Remember when people could actually SING?!
OMG I sound like my Mother!
And now I’m thanking all that is holy that I have NOT heard that version. Yeah, I totally must be living under a rock, or I change the station anything remotely teeny-bopperish (that is totally a word) comes on. Or both. Whatevah, I don’t care what these young whipper-snappers think anyway ;)
(and I’ve got more than 10 years on you even… GAH!)
I bow to the alter that is Dirty Dancing. I’m a rabid fan…having seen that movie well over 100 times.
BEP will rot in haides one day. That single choice to defame a DD song will secure them a place next to all of the other demons that have remade classics from the 80′s.
I know that poor Patrick is rolling over in his grave. He might just pull a “Ghost” and do something about it.
Bottom line, that song sucks for anyone who actually appreciated it in its original form. I guess what they say is true. Eventually the rhythm is going to get you. Or, you know, a song from one the best movies of all time.
As an eternal optimist, I hope that this will give the younger generation a reason to watch the movie for the first time.
The original version was my absolute favorite song when I was oh, around 10 or so? My favorite dance teacher’s class danced to it at the recital, and it was so awesome! That said, I love BEP’s version. It’s one of my current faves! The funky part right after he says “dirty bit” rocks. I like to keep my music style current, though I still appreciate some “oldies” too. Now bring on the Ke$ha!
I can’t help but think I am turning into my parents when I scream at the stereo and say, “get your filthy paws off my silky draws !”
