How Our Family Remembers the Dead

On Memorial Day my mother asked me to take flowers to my grandparent’s grave. I was happy to oblige because a) I’m a kick ass daughter and b) because I want a better inheritance than my brothers.

I sent her a picture to prove I went.

Her reply:

Thanks so much! Did they have anything to say?

Yes Mom, Grandma said she’s pissed you didn’t show and if she were alive she’s ground you.

I was working in the ground (gardening) so does that count for anything? Besides I took flowers to her parents’ grave yesterday.

Oh yeah, well I took a new friend for them to meet. Beat that Mom.

Fine, yours counts the most because you were there.

I love that my mother is going along with a made-up conversation about her dead parents. It makes me feel soooooo much better that in the picture I sent her I was pretending to be dead.

Inappropriate asshole definitely runs in our family.

It’s probably healthier. We are the family tht doesn’t do the flowers thing because uh the only person that “Gets” the flowers is the care taker. The person isn’t in the hole anymore it’s just a body.

I bet your grandparent’s were laughing at y’all.

Love your relationship with your mom. My mother would have rolled her eyes and said “Tammy!” in THAT voice. She got no flowers on memorial day….. but not because of that. She always used the excuse “He’s not there” for not putting flowers on my dad/her husband’s grave. So, same goes.
