I got my iPhone right before BlogHer last year. I had been putting it off because I had a $200 cancellation fee with Sprint that I was unwilling to pay. I finally couldn’t take it any more because there is a lot of iPhone talk on the Internet. Have you noticed?
I am overwhelmed with how much I love this thing, and not just because of the fun factor and getting in the club. I am so much more organized now that it was totally worth that stiff penalty. I know that a lot of people complain about AT&T service, but I have not had problem one.
Before I got my iPhone I kept hearing people say OMG, PLEASE STOP SAYING APP! and thought I would never be that much of a nerd. I guess that word is irritating to a lot of people. I find myself saying app at least five times a day now and I am unapologetic. I show total strangers apps I have on my phone. They are grateful. If you know me in real life, I have undoubtedly irritated you with all my app-talking. If I suggest one to you I will feel personally slighted if you don’t immediately download my app recommendation.
Here’s what I do on my iPhone, more or less in order of importance. I hope you find these apps useful, and by that I mean download them or I will pout:
1. Check my email. This comes with the iPhone. Just add your email account in the settings app.
2. Put all meetings, appointments and kid stuff/deadlines on my Google calendar and set alerts. This also comes with the phone, but I use my Google account calendar and it gets synced when email does. This has changed my life. I used to miss a lot of appointments.
3. Text my mom, friends and babysitter. There are a lot of text applications, but I prefer the default messages app already on the phone.
4. and 5. Check on Twitter. I use Echofon. It’s free, easy to use and has all of the Twitter lists on there as well. When I see someone tweet what could be an interesting article, I use Read it Later to, you guessed it, read it later when I have more time. I will fall straight down the rabbit hole if I don’t focus on one thing at a time. When you download Read it Later, you will get a prompt to save an article when you tap on a link in your Twitter app. I also use Tweetdeck but I can’t use Read it Later with it as far as I can tell.
6. Shazam songs on the radio. There is a free version, but I paid for Shazam Red. Twenty percent of the $4.99 price goes to fight AIDS in Africa. This coolness will listen to a song that is playing when you tap Tag. It records a snippet and matches it to the song. You never have to wonder what a song is again! It even works in noisy casino bathrooms, right Janet?
7. Play the scrabble game Words with Friends. If you like scrabble, you will love WWF. I play with my mom, the girl at my nail salon, my step-daughter, Maria, and some other peeps. Just find out your friend’s username and send them a game invite. I’m counting on this app to keep me from getting Alzheimer’s, because I don’t do crossword puzzles and Sudoku makes me crabby.
8. Play Bejeweled. I love it and it’s free. I’m too cheap to pay for Tetris. My daughter is great at it.
9. Distract my cage-fighting kids with the Smack Talking guinea pig. He records what you say to him and then repeats it in squeak speak. Adorable. My kids will listen to the guinea pig even if they won’t listen to me.
If the pig fails me I go with Would You Choose… They get a kick out of the quirky questions in the categories of gross-out, hilarious and bizarre. They even take turns and wait for others to answer. It’s magic.
10. Read blogs on my Google Reader. When I’m away from my computer I can check my reader on my phone. Basically, lines are meaningless to me now. It’s an opportunity to catch up.
11. Listen to Pandora radio. This one is truly amazing. You create an Internet radio station based on an artist or song you like. Your radio station will then play that artist and song and other similar music it thinks you will like. I prefer Pandora to buying iTunes songs because it’s free and I discover new stuff I wouldn’t even know to look for otherwise. Can’t say enough. Seriously.
12. Check the forecast on AccuWeather. I like the radar feature. The Weather Channel is also great.
13. Instantly find out the price of a house for sale. Realtor.com and Zillow both use your location to pull up the prices of nearby houses for sale and listings sold, complete with pictures and realtor info. Just make sure you pull the car over first. I make myself sick checking the falling real estate prices in my neighborhood.
14. Keep all my loyalty cards in CardStar. A friend turned me on to this brilliance. You input the barcode number of all your store cards and it creates a scannable image. Then you don’t have to carry them with you. I used to be annoyed by loyalty cards, but I’m considering getting more since this app makes it easy to keep track of them. It’s very cool.
15. Read the news. For $.99 you can buy the Info Junkie app. It has the major news outlets, gossip blogs, sports info, tech news and weather all under one app. You can even add the urls of other sources you would like to read on this app and delete the ones that don’t interest you.
16. Find stuff I need. I use Around Me to find businesses nearby. I use Flixter to find the movies that are out and where they are playing. Both give you maps to the location.
17. Pay bills. I use my bank’s app to check my balance and pay bills. Most large banks have their own app.
18. Educate the young’uns. I am amazed at the quality of the educational apps for kids of all ages. Here are a few we use. KidCalc, The States, See Read Say, Pocket Phonics Lite and Kids Math Lite.
19. Take better photos. I’m a novice photographer, but I use Camera Plus to zoom and add flash, and Photoshop Mobile to enhance the pictures I take. They are both free and make a huge difference in the quality of phone pics. You can upload pictures from Camera Plus directly to Facebook and Flickr.
20. Look for new and fun apps in the App Store. Even more apps!! The new Genius feature in Featured apps is addictive. It recommends new apps to you based on the ones you already have.
I could go on, but I think you get the idea. I’m a little app happy, and I’m dying to get your recommendations!

You really do. I couldn’t wait. I am weak.
I love the groceries app – it helps me keep my grocery list with me so I don;t just random shop while I am at the store. I love my CNN and Facebook Apps as well…

My hubs and I have Grocery Gadget – if I put something on my grocery list, it syncs on his, and vice versa. It’s awesome.

The sync feature would be lovely for us because we double buy groceries some days. I have a husband who loves to go the grocery store. It’s like he doesn’t trust me.

If could put a damn list on my husband’s phone, maybe he’d stop coming home with donuts and cookies and Little Debbie products…
Not that I ever doubted you were as cool as I am Laurin, but our iPhone uses are almost identical. Damn, you’re awesome.

I just downloaded half a dozen apps from this post!
Other faves of mine: Wurdle (like boggle), Box of Sox (a speed matching game), IMDb (I look up way too much IMDb stuff in the average day), NBC Olympics (obviously!), and my new favorite game: Jigsu (sudoku, but with tetris-shaped pieces instead of individual numbers). I also have about 8,832 time-management style games, because MAN do I love those.

You people with your iPhones. GAH!
Okay…I really DO want one. Badly. But I detest AT&T.
When the iPhone comes to T-Mobile I’m ALL OVER IT.

AT&T works just fine for me and I’m just across the bridge. Just sayin’.
Thanks for the tips. You should check out Urbanspoon which I use when I cant decide where to eat. Bump to look like a huge NERD when I meet other iPhone bumpers, AAA roadside app saves all ur info so all you have to do is hit “Request Roadside Assistance Now”, and iConvert because you never know when you’re going to need to convert gallons into ounces or miles into kilometers. Like I said, N-E-R-D.

I forgot about Urban Sppon. Maybe it’s because we don’t go out much and when we do we go to the same places. That AAA one is getting downloaded!
I must really be aiming low, I still use an answering service on a home phone and have no cellphone at all!

I’m with you…I’ve been with AT&T for 6 years and have never had an issue. So I just don’t get it when people complain so much.
I love my iPhone, in fact, I don’t think I could live without it. It completes me. Happy to say I have most of the apps that you recommended, the few I don’t have I have totally written down and will be checking out when I get home. Will also be checking out some of the apps recommended in the comments. I am an APP Whore, but pretty proud of it.

Pretty great, huh? My friend told me about this one just a couple of weeks ago.
I loooove my iphone. I may be slightly addicted. My new fave apps are Sleep Cycle which measures how you sleep and wakes you at the best time within 30 min of your desired time (awesome) and Sunday Lawn (which is a game where you have to cut grass and earn points.) I also love having my email so I can just check it while on the phone. Dear Steve Jobs: I love you.

I used to not get the whole i-phone thing. I liked my phone just fine. But. Then. I. Got. A. Droid. Phone. And it has apps. And I love it like no one should love a phone. (Seriously, it has an app that turns your phone into a vibrator, but since I’m a plastic penis peddler by trade, I have no need for that app!)
So live, love and laugh with your i-phones, I get it now.

My friend has a droid. We had a competition in a bar recently where we tried to prove whose Shazam app worked better. Nerds.
Does that vibrator drain the battery super-fast?

February 23, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Well, I actually have the Droid Eris, because I didn’t like the way the Moto Droid fit in my hand. Nerd–> Me. Anyway, I figured if I had the vibrator app that I probably wouldn’t be able to EVER put my phone down, so I refrained from downloading at all.
As it is, it is hard to put it down anyway.

Oooh, I’d recommend that you refrain from saying “app” any more…please?

February 23, 2010 at 4:12 pm
You recommend? That’s very courteous of you.
Ok so I’m hopelessly addicted to the iphone, well mines now a better itouch lol b/c we no longer have At&T, we had them 10 years ago, figured hey we’ll go back to them b/c we really wanted the iPhone, we were tired of Alltell and their BS. Well the customer service that AT&T had 10 years ago is no longer what it is now, it sucks now .Anyways, I still have my iphone and use it very much other than calling and texting I use it daily. I have a whole page of apps just for my daughter. I think out of that whole page we paid for 3 of the games she has on it. I have maybe bought a total of 15 games and I have just about 10 pages full of apps. One I recommend is Pandora Box, you can get apps that have recently become free or discounted. I could list all the kids ones that she really likes but that’s a lot lol One your kids might like is called Martian, they get to make their own Martians, another is doodle kids and you can even get etch a sketch which is really cool. I love wattpad for reading books, and I love word games and Jumbline is awesome. I could go on and on all day about all my apps I use but I don’t think there’s room lol I was spoiled though with the iPhone and no other phone compares, which is why I have a basic phone right now with internet, nothing special, it’s not smartphone and I won’t get one till it compares with really close to the iphone. Hopefully someday soon other companies will carry the iphone. We even jailbroke one of our iphones and had Tmobile on it but we left them for a better deal through hubbies work, which i was sad about but with todays economy and we have one income you have to do what you have to do.

February 24, 2010 at 7:23 am
I want to make Martians. That sounds fun. I’m checking out Pandora Box as well.
I, too, love my iPhone with undying devotion, and will never go back to a regular phone again. I will download all your recommendations without question. Thanks!
