When I wrote about my ongoing battle with migraines a few months ago, I was so touched and grateful for the support and suggestions everyone gave me. It gave me the determination to keep slogging away at finding some relief. Seriously, I made a list of all of the ideas and suggestions in the comments, determined to check them all off if needed before I gave up and just lived with the pain.
I am happy to report that Doctor V, the migraine specialist/neurologist I started seeing, was able to help me. He put me on a new medication and I have not had a migraine since the first week after the appointment.
Doctor V was an odd duck who dictated his notes on our meeting as we spoke. Once I got used to his style, I was comforted by his confidence and directness. I was ready to sign up for nearly anything at that point.
He listened to me and talked into his dictation machine (who still does that?) as I gave him the list of different medications I had tried over the years, and what I was currently taking. He matter of factly told me, or rather his recorder, that I would be discontinuing all current meds and starting a new one that “would fix me right up.”
That scared me to death. I was convinced that I was addicted for life to the Ambien CR and the Effexor XR I was taking. My internal medicine doctor even told me so. The same internal medicine doctor who had prescribed them to me in the first place.
Effexor is an anti-depressant which is used off-label for migraine prevention. I don’t really like taking medicine so I tried to stop taking it a few times, but I would get a bizarre feeling of vertigo and tons o’fun brain zaps. The Ambien? If I didn’t take it I couldn’t sleep a wink. Not one wink.
Even though I was terrified of how hard getting off these (admittedly useless) meds would be, I agreed to try. The first two nights were pretty bad, but by the third night I slept a little bit. I now sleep through the night just fine, even better than before the Ambien. Go figure. I never had any of those awful withdrawal effects from the Effexor.
The magical Doctor V drug is a low dosage of Pamelor, an old-fashioned anti-depressant that works like a charm on migraines. I go in this week for the first follow-up with Doctor V and I may just kiss him on the mouth. That’ll give him something to dictate.
And now for the second reason for this post. My ass. It runneth over. The weight gain, my god, the weight gain! I didn’t notice it at first, it being the holidays and all. Also, I had been on a three-month cheesecake eating binge. Normally, that wouldn’t matter much since I have always had the metabolism of a goat. I can eat pretty much anything I want and not gain weight. Yeah, it pisses people off all the time.
When I weighed myself again, long after the holidays were over, I could no longer deny the truth. I have put on a solid 15 pounds since I started taking Pamelor. I can no longer wear any of my cute jeans. The baggy boyfriend jeans I recently bought fit perfectly. Sigh. So not the point of boyfriend jeans.
I tried getting into my skinny jeans the other day for kicks. I was able to get them buttoned, but it resulted in the worst muffin top I had ever seen – more like a soufflé top, if I’m being honest. I looked ridiculous.
I’m very happy my head doesn’t hurt, but I’m fat. I’m not complaining, I’m just sayin’.

I think headaches are worse than an extra 15lbs. Plus, I’ve seen you.. you can totally carry that extra ten and five with your height!
Continued Feel Good, Mama!

@Secret Agent Mama/Mishelle, Thanks for that. Too bad it didn’t go to my boobs instead of my butt and midsection.
@laurinevans,
When you figure out how to DiRECT where those extra pounds go, PLEASE let me know!!

Ugh, I remember that weirdo brain zap/vertigo feeling when I stopped taking antidepressants.
My mom suffered migraines for YEARS, so I’m glad you’re finding some relief from your pain in spite of any side effects…

@assertagirl, Isn’t it the worst? I felt like I was going to fall down half the time. And driving? Not fun.

Well as we both know very well Lauren: LIFE LIKES TO PUNISH US. But I agree, being forced to give up the goat metabolism in exchange for no migraines (as a migraine sufferer) is a good deal (IMO). And as a former transcriptionist “I go in this week for the first follow-up with Doctor V and I may just kiss him on the mouth. That’ll give him something to dictate.” made me laugh like a hyena. Thank you.

@katie, Or he could write a letter to Penthouse! I’ll bet many of his patients fall in love after he cures their migraines.

When you start off tall and smokin’ hot, you can carry the extra 15lbs nicely, I’m sure. No more migraines is worth it tho, yo.

So glad you’ve found something that helps.
I feel you on the weight gain, but it was trade off for you. For me, just a love for cake.

@Tena, Thanks. By the way, cake is a food group. There has to be something else you could give up. I couldn’t live without the cake.

Happy to hear the migraines are gone.
My daughter had an appt with a specialist once who dictated his notes while we were in the room. I felt like he was judging us, “the daughter said this, but Mom said it was this”. It was so weird.

@mommabird2345, Thanks. That is pretty funny. Just imagine what doctors who don’t dictate put in their notes.

I tried Pamelor last year for headaches, I’m so glad it worked for you. I had the same weight gain problem, but I had just finished taking Topamax on which I lost 10 pounds so it just brought me back to “normal” before I had to quit it (other side effects, which I will not mention because if you’re anything like me, you’ll get them the instant you read them).
The weight gain should level off (if it hasn’t already), but in the meantime, I hope the headaches stay away. If anything, I think that this really is a sign from the universe that you NEED to go shopping.

@Overflowing Brain (Katie), Right?? I actually do need to go shopping soon. My lounge pants are getting a little worn.
When I went off of Effexor I woke up one morning not knowing how to turn off my alarm clock. God only knows what these pills do to us in the long run….

@Jen, That scared me to death. I felt like I had altered my brain somehow. I wish I had been told that would happen before I took it.

@Shauna, You’re sweet. I was wearing Spanx. Shhh.
I’m glad your migraines are getting better! And don’t stress too much about the weight gain – muffin tops are the best part of the muffin after all! At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

@Al_Pal, Yes, I am grateful. It’s life-changing.
Everyone is saying you can carry the extra 15lbs no problem and you’re saying you now have nothing to wear. Um.. shopping spree? To celebrate your happy pain-free weight gain? Seriously, pretty much any reason for a shopping spree is good with me even if I’m buying a size bigger.
Well maybe not CURRENTLY as that the exact opposite of my current goal. But I didn’t just stop suffering from migraines. You did. So go shop!!

Hi, I was taking Pamelor for migraines as well… I also gained weight with it- 20 lbs in 6 months, in fact. Talk to your doc- maybe he’ll be able to come up with some solutions or can adjust the dosage. Best of luck!
Laurin-
Can identify with you to the fullest with, migraines, medicine, &, weight gain, I know it is no fun. I have been on topamax before it was indicated for migraines. I am a big fan…although; I like to say not to substitute someone else’s judgment for your own. I have had great success with lack of pain, and weight loss. If you and your doc decide it is for you, I wish you the same!

@Elaine Brosnan, Thank you. Topamax didn’t work for me and I had some of the weird side effects. I know a lot of people have success with Topamax.
@Laurin (@LaurinEvans), Laurin, sorry to hear you had side effects. I have had my run with side effects and meds! And I read Lesslie’s post, ahh, so frustrating. It’s amazing the differences. My hope is that us women, mom’s, and migraine suffers can help each other out. I had the same as you, took a pill for migraines 11 yrs ago and I gained 15 LBS, so I know how NOT fun that is. You are an inspiration, and I love your attitude. I now have and extra 20 LBs, and the only reason is cause I eat chips and have cocktails!
I was all ready to call up my neurologist and tell him about this and that I wanted to try it until you mentioned the weight gain. I am still harboring the 30/40 extra lbs from my kids pregnancies. I can’t handle a possible 20lb weight gain. it’s just not an option for me. I’m 5’4″. I’m pretty much off the BMI charts.
I tried topamax and I think topamax is satan. it didn’t make me feel wonderful at all. it didn’t improve my headaches. I had uncontrollable moods. Soda/ other drinks but water had a funny taste, I was extremely tired and then when they cut my dosage down, I lost my appetite completely, and I had this odd tingling that happened in my foot occasionally, which, I was lectured that I should have called the Dr the second I experienced it but I just thought my foot fell asleep.
Right now I’m on a heart medicine that has been known to help improve migraines. It’s called propanolol. which seems to help even though I’ve only been on it 3 weeks. no noticeable weight gain or weird side effects. but I do have Midrin to take if I do feel a headache coming on. and I REALLY like those.
Glad to hear that you are Migraine Free. I was surprised to find out how many people, woman in particular, are affected by migraines.

January 27, 2010 at 8:43 am
@Lesslie, Yeah, I wasn’t thrilled about the weight gain, particularly because I have nothing to wear now. I had that extremity tingling thing with Topamax too. Not fun. I really think it’s a matter of trial and error to find what works with your chemistry.
So many people have migraines. I’m worried my son is going to have them because he tells me his head hurts and then usually throws up, just like I do. He had an MRI and a full workup for other problems and the tests were negative. At least I’ll know how to get him through it!
@Laurin (@LaurinEvans), Yeah. my Neurologists thinks mine are genetic since my mother has them. I really hope my children do not get them, either.
