The Biggest Loser Makes Me Eat

by Heather Spohr on October 28, 2009

heatherSo I have this problem when I’m pregnant. I can’t gain weight. I have terrible nausea and when I don’t, I have complete food aversion and loss of appetite. I feel totally robbed. I want to be a rosy-cheeked chubby pregnant lady, not a gaunt gray-faced barfing pregnant lady. I know it’s not in the cards for me, though. Eating is a constant struggle when I am pregnant. Eating is WORK.

(It’s so weird because normally when I’m not pregnant I can drive by a Krispy Kreme shop and gain weight just by looking at it. And then off the hot glazed donuts.)

Today, however, I realized I eat a large amount of food (for me) every Tuesday night. I couldn’t figure out why, and then it suddenly hit me: Tuesday night is when The Biggest Loser is on!

Right now I am watching Biggest Loser, and I am stuffing my face with my leftover dinner from yesterday. Before that? I had a slice of lemon pie. Before that? I ate half a jar of pumpkin butter. OFF OF A SPOON. I’m already thinking about having another piece of lemon pie. AND I’M ONLY THIRTY MINUTES INTO THE EPISODE.

Hang on…pumpkin butter on the keys…so sticky and delicious…OK, I’m back.

So what is it about this show that makes me want to eat and eat and eat? It’s not Jillian, she scares the crap out of me. It’s not the endless sweating, sweat on other people makes me gag. And it’s CERTAINLY not the appetite-ruining moobs (man boobs). So what is it?

The answer, I think, is that I’m inspired by the show’s contestants who, like me, are fighting to take control of their relationship with food. Sure, our situations are little different – they eat too much while the pregnant me eats too little – but we’re all determined to beat our demons while crazy people scream in our ears (or trainers or doctors, whatever). I am rooting Shay on as she cries on that evil-looking ladder machine, and I am crying while I take another bite of my burrito. And pumpkin butter. And lemon pie. Shay would TOTALLY cheer me on, right?

And don’t worry, if this pregnancy is like my last one, I will gain 25 pounds immediately after giving birth. It’s a cruel cruel pumpkin butter filled world.

There is nothing wrong with eating pumpkin butter off of a spoon. In fact, I believe it was intended to be consumed that way. Keep up the good work!

I hear that! You know I had the same issues with pregnancy and post pregnancy weight. I eat with The Biggest Loser until their weight loss starts becoming noticeable- then it’s on- it’s the competitor in me- last night- I had a protein shake while watching it- granted I was sitting on my ass- but watch out!

unfortunately, I still eat when I watch it when I’m NOT pregnant. I start out like, “I’m gonna jog in place until the next commercial!” and then I get a glass of wine, and some cheese, and sit on my ass.

Weird thought and maybe it wouldn’t work, but can you get the previous season on netflix?

seriously, right? It would solve all my problems if Biggest Loser was on 24/7.

@mamaspohr, Maybe you should test it out. DVR it and try watching it again the following night? Might not work, but you just never know.

What about Survivor? Would that work? I always eat when I watch that. Especially towards the end, when the skinny girls turn into sticks.

I am totally logging into netflix RIGHT NOW.

Survivor doesn’t have that effect on me. You’d think it would but all I can think about is how badly they all must smell.

Loved the Pumpkin Butter last year, but tried to follow the recipe for Pumpkin Soup on the jar….it was not so loved. Last time I was at TJ’s I had a jar in my hand and then putting it back shuddering over the Pumpkin Butter/Soup episode….must give it another try.

PUMPKIN SOUP FROM PUMPKIN BUTTER?!

Must. Have.

I totally agree! I pig out on ice cream or pizza rolls every single Biggest Loser night. Although, I must admit, it’s not pregnancy related at all. I’ve always gorged myself through this show, baby or no baby.

I totally do too. I just wanted to blame it on pregnancy.

I am with Issa. You need to find past seasons of Biggest Loser to help you eat. Get your doctor to write a prescriptiom for it and make the evil insurance company pay for it.

@mamaspohr, darn, no trader joe’s in Texas.

I totally do that too! But I actually felt bad about this morning and went to the gym… then stopped for ice cream on the way home… it was 9 a.m.

Awesome.

whoa, whoa, whoa… hold on a minute! I think the REAL question here is… pumpkin butter?!? As in peanut butter… but different?

Of course I had to Google it. Need I say, I’m intrigued?!? You had me at ‘can also be used in cheesecakes’. Hello! I declare myself officially willing to gain weight on your behalf. In fact, I’m so willing that I actually started this process already… 2 years ago.

You’re welcome!

I would describe it more like applesauce in consistency. It is so amazingly good. OMG cheesecake? I MUST INVESTIGATE!

I too had never heard of pumpkin butter and I am eyeing the pumpkins sitting in the backyard right now…Hmmmm I wonder if I could whip some up?! Sounds scrumptious!

And Moobs…Genius pure genius!!! I will now forever be referring to them as Moobs. :D

Oh and by the way Top Chef is the show that makes me uncontrollably eat and this butt can’t afford for me to be shoving it down but that doesn’t stop me. No self control here when it comes to that show. So when Bravo runs marathons of it its not a pretty site!

I heard a rumor that pumpkin butter is easy to make. That’s assuming, of course, that you have skills in the kitchen. I have none.

MOOOOOOOBS!

Yup, totally stuff my face during BL as well. Last night was buttered egg noodles. I have no idea why, but BL makes me eat. And I could actually qualify for the show. Jillian would have a field day with me.

I’m totally unclear on why I have no pumpkin butter. And dumbfounded on why I’ve never heard of it. How have I lived all these years without it? I’m so going to Trader Joe’s tomorrow.

I had a fried sandwich for lunch and then some ice cream. And then some pumpkin bread from Starbucks. And seconds at dinner. Oh, and I finished the babies food because we can’t let it go to waste. And I think breakfast was a 3 course meal, but I can’t remember that far back. I watched BL last night, late, so I had to make up for it with the eating today.

I’d never heard of it either! I am so glad I was actually paying attention as I went through the aisles at Trader Joe’s. It’s so yummy.

Um, fried sandwich? EXPLAIN.

Pumpkin butter? Is that American or something, or do I just live too far in the sticks here in Canada?
This made me laugh, that you eat, while the others can’t (but I totally get your connection). And Jillian, she scares the heck out of me too, but I LOVE the show.
Me…it’s big Swedish fish while watching.

hmm, I don’t know! Do you have apple butter there? It’s the same thing, just different flavors. It’s seasonal and so delish.

I LOVE SWEDISH FISH!

I am equal opportunity pumpkin product consumer. I feel pumpkin butter needs a little more love shown to it; it’s always getting shown up by pie and bread.

And, in all seriousness, what you said about relationships with food is something I NEEDED to read. My blood sugar levels run my life, like an evil dictator. A crash ruins me for hours. Like yesterday! Because I wasn’t taking care of myself! I should control my glucose levels! They shouldn’t control me! Aaaand I’m rambling. With exclamation points.

In any case, I’m sending hungry-every-two-hours vibes your way.

Blood sugar crashes are the worst. I am enjoying the pumpkin butter and other sugar while I still can, because I have my gestational diabetes test in a week and a half. I failed in my first pregnancy, so I am prepared for the same result this time. Until then? SUGAR ALL THE TIME!

I have always pigged out during BL. I think it’s because I felt like (compared to the contestants) I’m in great shape, so a little nosh won’t hurt.

My goal this season is to NOT EAT during the show. You should see me stuffing my face until 7:59, though ;)
