It’s a Sickness…A Bad One

aiming-low-picMy name is Meghan…and I’m a Serial Project Starter.

I can’t help it.  It’s like a compulsion.

And the problem isn’t that I *start* so many projects.  That, in and of itself, wouldn’t be so bad.  The problem…is that I don’t finish them.

My house is littered with half finished endeavors.  Half the wall above the chair in my living room is covered in frames.  The rest of the frames are stacked next to the chair.

I started crocheting last year.  I was gung ho for a few months…and then my enthusiasm fizzled.  I even had an Etsy shop for a while!  But now?  I have BAGS of gorgeous yarn that, hopefully eventually, I’ll do something with.  I have a few pieces that are in various stages of unfinishedness (totally a word, yo).  Hopefully they’ll be completed at some point.

I have a shelf my step-dad forced us to take off his hands lovingly passed on to us.  It’s partly sanded.  I got that much done with my initial burst of enthusiasm.  But now it sits forlornly in my garage waiting for a final sanding and to be painted.  It will eventually be hung in my living room and adorned with treasures.  Or crap.  Whatever.

The list could go on.  And ON.  But I’ll spare you the details of ALL the unfinished projects.  No need to give my mother a heart attack this morning.

I don’t really know what to DO about this.  I mean, the obvious answer is to FINISH THE DAMN PROJECTS.  But that’s easier said than done.  Finishing them requires motivation.  And time.  And possibly money.  And a whole list of other things that are hard to come by.

Am I the only one?  Do the rest of you people actually start things and finish them?  And then take photos of each project to put in your up to date scrapbooks?

If you do, I hate you.

If not, why don’t you come over tomorrow and we can drink Iced Tea and avoid all the work that needs to be done.

You’ll just have to ignore the mess.

I started crocheting a blanket for my daughter. She turns 6 in two weeks. It’s not done yet. I worked on it while I was pregnant for my son. He turns 3 on Monday. And I haven’t touched it for this baby. Who is coming out in 19 days or less.

I also have one page to go in her scrap book, and I have only completed one page in his. This baby isn’t getting one. Bottom line.

@AJ,

I crocheted a blanket for my second son, who just turned two. It was finished before he was even born and it’s his favorite thing in the entire world. It’s my shining glory.

All the other crap, though? NEVER GOING TO GET DONE. And honestly, I only finished that damn blanket because my older son had my blankets from when I was a baby and I felt guilty.

Sigh.

Cross stitch, crochet, picture frames, scrapbooks, recipe binders….nope, not just you. Seems the only thing I can finish is my wine, my cinnamon roll and an occasional decorated cake.

@kpotterb,

Oh, I used to LOVE to cross stitch. Now that you mention it, I think there’s an unfinished hydrangea project in my closet somewhere. GREAT. Add that to the list.

I’m with you on finishing the wine and cinnamon roll. The cakes? You’re WAY out of my league. I’m a big supporter of my local bakery. :0)

I am so glad to know I am not the only one out there with this “sickness.” Wish I lived closer so we could get together and drink that tea and procrastinate together.

I’m on my way. I do this and it really bugs me. Let me know if you find the solution or a program we can attend. I’ll have a burst of creativity, get started on something and then find I need something to complete it. It goes on the to do list on my phone where it remains, haunting me, until I get a new cell phone. It’s bad.

@Laurin,

Until you get a new cell phone. Awesome.

I am so on the same page as you. I have a HUGE stack of mostly framed photos on my office floor just waiting to become the “family photo wall”. I have a growing stack of old frames, headboads, shelves in the garage waiting for sanding & painting. Half of my office is still in boxes, and only half of my stairwell and connecting hallway are painted the prettiest shade of green you ever did see.
I feel your pain. I just don’t feel the urge.

@Stephanie,

The worst part about my frame situation is that there are only photos in some of them. So I have frames hanging on my wall with the stock images from the store. FAIL.

Also…’m curious about this paint color.

My girls are still asking when we can finish their Disney cruise scrapbook. 4 pages are done. We got back 4 months ago.

The scrapbook is now hiding in a box in my closet.

@Angie,

My closet is where things go to die.

It could be it’s own AL post.

I don’t even bother starting anymore. So, in a way, I aspire to be where you are!

Why didn’t anyone ever tell me you were actually supposed to finish the projects? Crap. I scrapboook, I’m a year behind. I sew, usually only at Halloween. Last year I was finishing my kids costumes until literally 30 seconds before we walked out the door. I have piles of picture frames sitting everywhere. And these packing boxes keep getting in my way (we moved in in Feb.) I think I should be a card-carrying member of the club.

@Sarah,

I want to learn to sew…but I just can’t justify starting yet ANOTHER “thing.” Regardless of how practical it is.

Oh well. The club sounds like more fun anyway.

Damn no! I don’t finish crap. That’s why I stopped starting crap. I did learn how to knit last year, and in the past year I’ve made 4 scarves of various lengths and styles. I tell everyone I’m going to make them a scarf and now I’m running late and winter is coming and they’re all going to be like “WTF Jaime?” and I’m going to be like “what you know me!”

I used to have the saaaaaaame problem. I just stopped doing things altogether. :D

@Jaime,

I think your idea of just not doing things altogether is AWESOME. Except for sitting on the couch drinking wine. I’m going to keep doing that.

@AMomTwoBoys, Probably if it involves sitting it is for me.

You are definitely NOT the only one. My advice: wherever possible, enlist the help of a professional. At this point you’ve admitted you have a problem. It’s time for help. Maybe you know someone who, for $20, would finish sanding and painting that shelf, and even hang it? M

My husband and I started digging the hole for a patio this summer, and now all we have is a big hole. In September. So last week, I started calling contractors. Okay, the idea was good; save money, DIY. But it’s obviously never going to get done, and I’ll just have to pay for that.

@Sarah,

You’re a smart girl. Except my husband would KILL me if I hired someone to finish my projects. Literally. So that’s probably not the best idea for me…

I often have to make a list, and then threaten myself. Like, if you do not accomplish 2 things off this list, no TV! You have to clean out that closet or you can’t go out to dinner tonight! Ok, so it doesn’t work all the time. But sometimes? Sometimes it does, somehow…

Amber September 3, 2009 at 9:15 pm

HAHAH…I have a list of projects too (though no actual “to-do” list to track).
Digital pictures to be printed (I have a to-be printed folder on my computer)
Empty frames to be filled and hung (sitting stacked in the living room)
Scrapbook of my pregnancy (outline typed up, supplies purchased)
Fill in the blank baby book to be filled out (dates recorded on family website)
So yeah…I too suffer from the same sickness, Iced Tea you say?

The real answer is DONATE the unfinished projects to a retirement home. :) done and done

I am so SO very bad at hobbies. I’ve started puzzles, making dog toys, painting, organizing, cross stitching… the list goes on and on… I just get SO bored. I never finish anything, I think I have ADD. Seriously lol.

Someone once likened me to a firecracker…big explosion of energy, then fizzle out. All the excitement is in the ideas! The follow-through requires EFFORT. Blech.

Although I wonder sometimes if I actually got off the computer how much I would accomplish…;)
